The Eardley Family Get-Together Stitch Day
At 11AM Saturday, 5th July 2003, Saint James Church, Audley, England
To Commemorate Sir George Eardley / Yeardley, known as 'The Father of
Representative Government in North America.'
19 January, 2003

Dear Eardley's / Yeardley's Worldwide,

Firstly, do remember to pencil in 5th of July this year as the 'Eardley Stitch Day' at St.James, Audley, England at 11:00AM. Also, should you wish to have a stitch put into the tapestry by proxy that will be fine. A family can club together and designate someone to have the stitch inserted on behalf of your family. A record for posterity, of your participation will be kept 'for ever' so that future generations will be able to take pride in our achievement.
As the event nears we will post suitable venues where groups can arrange to share a meal and chat about all relevant matters.Frank Eardley of Walsall, England and myself will publish a pamphlet charting the history of Sir George Eardley / Yeardley and his contribution to Anglo-American History. Dennis Pickeral, Flowerdew Hundred Historian, along with New World Tapestry creator Tom Mor will lead the 'ceremony' by discussion of the Virginia settlement and Tom Mor will present the New World Tapestry and its meaning at Saint James Church. Reverend Peter Davies will also play his part along with Robert Jack Eardley and others. The order of 'play' will become ever clearer as events evolve nearer 5th of July. This week I discovered some letters written by Sir George Eardley / Yeardley. They can be viewed online on a number of sites. On Yahoo.com type in
'Thomas Jefferson Papers Series 8' and then click on 'Table of contents'. His letters and those of other household names can be viewed. The English used appears to the 'flowery' phonetic variety as in our name Eardley and in common use in Shakespeare's time which seems so strange to us today. Nevertheless, it makes an interesting read and shows that George had friends and enemies in much the same way as modern politicians do today. Land was the big issue and most letters were concerned with how to get their hands on more. George, it appears was not always in the best of health and on one occasion asks London to allow him to live a quiet life in retirement. I need to read more and if you have an interest do read them for yourselves and feel free to comment about them on the message board. A new feature which we introduce today is to invite Eardleys to recommend useful websites to each other so that we can all benefit from their contents. www.eardley.org will devote a special section to this feature. Let me begin by suggesting some sites which I find useful that you can link to below!
