hello.icame accross this sort of thing with my mothers family.i asked the registra if she had heard the name braithwait as a christian name before he was called eli braithwait tittensor.and she said what used to happen is because they could not register a child with the fathers surname if they were iligitimate and the man wouldnt marry them this was a crafty way of naming the father because you can call yourself anthing you want for a christian name.very good thinking i thought.hope this helps
