Francis.I understand your confusion and agree with the gist of your comments the influence of the Church etc etc---I went through the same 'system' myself.However there is as much evidence to suggest that as many Eardleys became Earlys as the other way round.A couple of years ago we received a huge amount of information from an Irish Eardley family in USA charting their roots in Ireland back to the 1600s with entries on gravestones to prove it.I'll have a look when I have a moment to spare and see if that family originated near the location you indicated in Ireland.My mother was from Galway so I'm comfortable with my Irish connection---having a foot in both camps if you know what I mean!Speak to you soon.Robert Francis.
