Scot Hat, in the neighbourhood of Newcastle, on Friday evening the 6th instant, the very sudden death of James Eardley, aged 43 years.
Eardley, who was a shoemaker, went about 5 o'clock on the previous Wednesday afternoon, to the Collier's Arms public house, in Scot Hay. He was not then tipsey, and having had something to drink, he slept at the house all night. The next morning at 7 o'clock he began to drink gin and water, and continued drinking the whole of the day, taking nothing to eat. He went to bed at the public house on the night, also; and after taking a light breakfast, on Friday morning, commenced drinking gin and water again; and in the course of the day he went to bed for four or five hours. As "the dog returns to its vomit, and the sow which is washed, to wallowing in the mire," so Eardley again returned to his curse, and plied himself with more liquor, getting on from gin to brandy.
Afterwards he became somewahat restless, and complained of feeling unwell and lay down on the sofa. Towards evening he got up and reeled about, and was asked if he would go home. He replied that he would, in a short time; but he sat down again, and almost instantly he was a corpse!
The above fact being detailed in evidence at an inquest held before W. Harding Esq., the jury returned a verdict of "died from the visitation of God".
