The three wheatsheaves(garbs) on a chevron azure(Blue) were the coat of the Earl of Chester, and are still used by the County of Cheshire. The Earl was granted a lot of land near Chester as a reward for his help to William the Conqueror. I think it denotes the Eardleys were on the land at the time of the conquest. The Audley canton of the fourth(upper left quarter) was added when the Eardleys became their tenants. The wheathsheaves and the stag rampant(upright) denote the rural nature of the holding These are my theories, shoot me down, disagree, just get in touch! Michael
